MEN’S FACIAL COSMETIC SURGERY
Very often we see men come in with skin hanging underneath their neck and chin, requesting improvement procedures. The facelift is the traditional procedure used to make a man look younger and his neck and jaw tighter. It is generally successful, and it involves making incisions around the ear, then pulling the skin back and pulling the tissues underneath the skin back with special buried sutures. In general, men have thicker skin and may have a bit more sagging in the months after the facelift than women, who have thinner skin and whose facelift tends to be a bit more durable. Every man including young men have a little bit of loose skin at the very bottom of their sub chin area, and this cannot be entirely removed. Al Pacino is a good example of a man who has had several facelifts and still has a little bit of loose skin underneath his chin, so this is an expected result.
We typically suggest other noninvasive procedures along with the facelift when appropriate to improve the quality of the result. Cheek implants and/or chin implants can significantly improve facelifts in both men and women, first because the bones tend to shrink a bit as you get older and the implant mimics the natural youthful bone, and second because the fat of the face, especially for those with lighter skin, tends to shrink as well. These implants mimic younger faces. An alternative to this is a facial implant with fat or with a fat substitute like Restylane, Juvederm, or Perlane. These products fill out the face in a very smooth and even fashion when used skillfully.
